OH! NO! The Amazon Rainforest is in Danger!

The Brazilian Congress, influenced by the agribusiness sector, seeks to change the Forest Code in Brazil to open more of the Amazon rainforest to be cleared. Not only will this destroy forested areas in the Amazon no longer protected by the Forest Code, but the clearing and burning of these lands will release millions of tons of greenhouse gas emissions into the atmosphere—making the impacts of climate change much worse.

  • The proposals to weaken the Forest Code include:
A 250% increase in the percentage of land a farmer is allowed to clearcut (from 20% to 50%)
  • Allowances for farmers to replant exotic tree species such as palm trees and eucalyptus in Legal Reserves that are intended to be native rainfores

The region has already lost almost 18% of the forest cover—an area larger than France—in the last 40 years. In theory, the change being discussed by the Brazilian Congress would immediately apply to 36% of the Amazon in the hands of the private sector.

If these changes to the Forest Code pass, they will stimulate deforestation, increased greenhouse gas emissions, land grabbing, and disputes over land rights in the Amazon. The Forest Code would legally allow for millions of acres of the Amazon to be deforested and then burned to further clear the land for grazing cattle or planting soy.

All this could happen under the protection of the law if we don't stop it. Please send the message below to the Brazilian Congress today. It's important they recognize that the world depends on the Amazon for our survival, and the world is watching Brazil. Please take a moment to sign the petition below that is being signed by people all around the world.

Say No To Brazilian Congress!

Tell KFC to put a lid on its destruction of the Amazon rainforest! SPEAK UP

Stop Bush's Last Minute Attacks on the Environment

Target: Administrator Johnson Stephen Johnson & Secretary Kempthorne Dirk

Even though President Bush has only a few months left in office, he is doing everything he can to help out his friends in Big Oil, Dirty Coal and other polluting industries on his way out of office. And, he is doing everything he can to make sure it will be difficult for the next Administration to undo the damage.President Bush is trying to undermine environmental protections by:* Selling sensitive public lands near some of our countries greatest national treasures such as Arches National Park in Utah in order to hand them over to Big Oil companies;* Substantially weakening the endangered species act by removing critical scientific review of the impact of federal permits on endangered and threatened species;* Allowing the EPA to ignore unsafe levels of rocket fuel in drinking water that pose a risk to nearly 40 million Americans; and,* Permitting more uranium mining near the Grand Canyon.Send messages to Interior Secretary Dirk Kempthorne and EPA Administrator Stephen Johnson and tell them not to undermine environmental protections in the final weeks of the Bush Administration.

Take A Stand against the Bush Administration!

Support the PAW Act - End Alaska's Aerial Hunting Program!

Target: U.S. House of RepresentativesSponsored by: Care2.com

Alaska is truly our nation's last frontier. It is also the last place in the U.S. where a few hunters still use aircraft to chase and kill wolves. They shoot these animals from the air or chase them to exhaustion before landing and shooting them point blank.
Congress passed a law thirty five years ago to put an end to aerial hunting. But Alaska is exploiting a loophole in federal law to resume the practice, not only for wolves, but bears as well. Hundreds of scientists have condemned what Alaska is doing, even as other states threaten to follow Alaska's lead. It's time to stop aerial hunting once and for all.Rep. George Miller (CA) has introduced the Protect America's Wildlife (PAW) Act, legislation to close a federal loophole and curb Alaska's brutal aerial hunting program -- and prevent programs like it from spreading to places like the Greater Yellowstone region.

Please urge your Representative to sign on as a cosponsor to Rep. George Miller's PAW Act.

Sign the Petition and show your support!
